The number of US children living in single-parent homes has nearly doubled in 50 years: Census data

WASHINGTON, D.C., January 4, 2013, (LifeSiteNews.com) – The number of children living in single-parent homes has nearly doubled since 1960, according to data from the 2010 Census.

  •   The Washington Times analyzed the most recent census data, showing that the percentage of two-parent families has dropped significantly over the past decade in all 50 states. Even as the total number of American households with children increased by 160,000, the number of two-parent households decreased by 1.2 million.
  •   Today, one-third of American children – a total of 15 million – are being raised without a father. Nearly five million more children live without a mother.........

  • The Springfield News-Leader’s Every Child public-service journalism project aims to focus public attention on critical challenges facing children in our community, to foster discussion and to build on existing initiatives to find solutions.

  •  Statistically, a child in a single-parent household is far more likely to experience violence, commit suicide, continue a cycle of poverty, become drug dependent, commit a crime or perform below his peers in education.
  • According to the Single Parent Success Foundation, a national nonprofit that encourages educational opportunities for single parents:

• 63 percent of suicides nationwide are individuals from single-parent families.
• 75 percent of children in chemical dependency hospitals are from single-parent families.
• More than half of all youths incarcerated in the U.S. lived in one-parent families as a child.

The News-Leader spoke to four families who are trying to escape those statistics.
Although all have diverse backgrounds and different living arrangements, all are experts at making it work. All have unique and complex schedules, with delicate balancing acts between work, play and all that comes in between............

Too often Fatherless or Motherless children are not given the opportunity to pursue their dreams or ambitions in life. Many talented children that are passionate about learning the Arts, Dance, Singing, Music, Painting, Sports, Doctors, Lawyers, or anything at all, often do not have those opportunities available to them. We are looking to form partnerships with local businesses like, Art schools, Dance studios, Music schools, Gymnastic schools, as well as local Colleges, Schools, Instructors, Baseball, Football, Basketball, Golf, Coaches, etc. that will help encourage children to NEVER GIVE UP on their dreams!
We hope by partnering with these local businesses and Heroes that we can Inspire and provide the encouragement and support, that these children often NEED! A child's Self Esteem and Self-Confidence is very fragile and too often taken for granted! Single Parents working two jobs just to pay the bills, often do not have the time or money to spend thus, not allowing their children to excel in areas that they are passionate about. Please help us, help and inspire these children! Show your support through giving donations, or volunteering to help in any way! (see our Sponsors and Events pages for additional opportunities to show your support). We appreciate your time and know it is very valuable and hope to hear from you and to meet you in the very near future.
